In Fortnite, most people waste their time on the wrong menu lines. Not out of ignorance: because the render mode they picked makes some of those lines completely useless, and nobody told them.
The rest happens outside the game: in Windows, in your driver panel, and in what your motherboard never switched on. That is where most of the gain sits.
What really holds Fortnite back
Fortnite runs on Unreal Engine 5. That is the first thing to understand: what draws the nice shadows and the detailed geometry is exactly what costs the most. Nanite, Lumen and virtual shadow maps are built for image quality, not for holding 240 frames per second in a late-game build fight.
But Fortnite's real trap is its menu. The render mode you pick decides what the other lines actually do. Since patch 37.00 on 7 August 2025, that menu offers a Performance mode running on DirectX 12, and the old DirectX 11 Performance mode now appears there as Legacy Performance.
Direct consequence: every guide written before August 2025 has you tuning lines that no longer do anything in the mode you play. Performance mode does not use Unreal Engine 5's heavy features. Lowering Lumen or shadows while you are in it gains nothing, because they were not running in the first place.
Add DirectX 12 shader compilation, redone after every game or driver update, and you have the explanation for most early-match stuttering. Your machine is not giving up, the engine is catching up.
What FPSDoctor fixes for Fortnite

The average gain we measured on Fortnite
It depends heavily on your render mode. A machine already in Performance mode starts very high and will gain less in percentage terms. A machine on full DirectX 12 with Lumen on and fifteen background programs has far more headroom to recover.
The right habit stays the same: measure before, apply, measure after. One match is enough to settle it.
