On CS2 the question is not how to reach 400 frames per second. It is how not to drop to 120 at the exact moment a smoke blooms in front of you.
That dip is not fixed by lowering shadows. It is fixed in Windows, in the driver panel, and in what your BIOS has left asleep since you built the machine.
What really holds CS2 back
Counter-Strike 2 is a CPU game. Valve lists four hardware threads minimum, 8 GB of RAM, 85 GB of storage and a DirectX 11 compatible card with 1 GB of video memory and Shader Model 5.0 support. On Windows, rendering goes through DirectX 11.
Translation: unless you play at 4K, your graphics card is almost never the limiting factor. Your CPU clock speed, your memory latency and the number of things running alongside decide your frame rate.
Source 2 has its own load spike, and everyone knows it: smokes. Volumetric smoke is the heaviest moment of the round, and it is precisely when you need your frames. A PC holding 300 FPS in an empty server and dropping to 120 inside a smoke does not have a graphics card problem, it has a headroom problem.
Finally, the CS:GO legacy does damage. Autoexec files and long launch option strings copied around for ten years no longer have the same effect on Source 2, when they have any at all. The engine spreads its own work across the available cores.
What FPSDoctor fixes for CS2
